The commission of this portrait was inspired by the fairytale "The Musicians of Bremen", where a donkey, a dog, a cat, and a rooster stack on top of each other to play instruments and sing. All the animals in this portrait (a Yellow Lab, two sibling cats, a hedgehog, and Rufus the parakeet) are living in the same household together. In the background are the flatirons of Boulder, Colorado where they all live.
